Capoeira is an African-rooted martial art from Brazil that combines music, dance, acrobatics and self-defense. Our capoeira school welcomes everyone so come join our community! Women, femmes, and LGBTQ community encouraged to join, It embodies the spirit of community and gives its practitioners a means to personal growth and liberation from social and personal constraints. We understand capoeira to be a martial art form that has maintained dance-like elements and music, to become a deceptive fight and enjoyable means of personal expression.
At Tucson Capoeira, kids will work their flexibility, reflex, agility, rhythm, basic acrobatic skill, and bolster their self-confidence. In addition, youth develop their Portuguese language skills by learning basic greetings, commands, Capoeira songs and general vocabulary.
We welcome kids aged 5 – 12 with or without prior experience and at any level of fitness. In our Monday & Wednesday kids class, we will break the group by age, while sharing some activities together.
Pre-Capoeira introduces children ages 3-5 to the cultural art form of Capoeira. Our Pre-Capoeira program is designed to introduce the many elements of Capoeira to the children in an animated and supportive way that is age appropriate.
Our youth program begins at age 6 and is a great way to build confidence, social skills, coordination, and most of all learn about another culture. We are proud to have an energetic group of children that are always ready to make a new friend.
We welcome adults of all ages to check out our community. We have people from all walks of life that are encouraging and challenging in a positive and dynamic communal learning culture. No matter your skill level, come check us out.

We are new to capoeira but have been very pleased with this experience for our kids (they started at age 8 and 10 but some start much younger). Building strength of mind, body and character while also having fun. Safe environment and community involvement is A+
Awesome teachers. Awesome environment. I visit every time I have the opportunity to.
Our teenager loves going to classes here, and is always looking forward to the next class! There is alwase a lot of good energy!

Beautiful studio and a beautiful community! Thank you!
Tucson capoeira has a gorgeous studio space and the community is welcoming and very supportive. It is a family environment that makes you feel apart of it right when you walk in the door.
Great classes
Great teacher!
No other Capoeira school I’d go to. Everyone is so friendly and down to earth and the instructor is awesome!!! I feel at home
My 13 year old just started a few weeks ago. They’re having so much fun and have been made to feel so welcomed and included!
The instructor is friendly, and reminds me of family. I always feel welcomed, and the students are uplifting. Would recommend 10/10 The Dende feel of the class is amazing #Dende
The energy with this group is amazing! Muito Axe. Go visit and take a class or join a roda and see what all the hype is about. Highly recommend for all ages. Very welcoming too if you are brand new to Capoeira.
Great studio, great community, great teachers. You haven’t lived life until you come here.
The head of the group is quite committed to community outreach. I like that he stands with the community.
I came to Tucson about a year and a half ago. I’ve played capoeira for 20-ish years on and off, but hadn’t really had a capoeira home for 10 years while I deployed and worked overseas. With good health again, and a fresh arrival to Tucson I contacted UCA Quilombolas to see if Contra-Mestre Besouro would welcome a transplant.
He not only invited me to visit classes, but also took some time to get to know me as a person. Also, the classes themselves focus on specific areas relative to learning all aspects of capoeira. Are we experts in specific aspects you may have seen elsewhere (training for MMA fighting, or performing every spectacular acrobatic movement, or diving deeply into all aspects of Afro-Brazilian culture and music, or other specialties)? No.
Instead, students at UCA Quilombolas learn capoeira from many perspectives, taking classes that teach all that capoeira has to offer. With my experience, CM Besouro occasionally asks me to teach specific classes that play to my strengths (simply having been in our capoeira sub-culture for as long as I have and having played capoeira in a lot of places). Other students with experience teach aspects related to their strengths (beautiful movement, timing and strategy, working with children, etc). CM Besouro oversees the trajectory of his group and teaches regularly to reinforce his vision of capoeira as well as his teacher’s vision, Grande-Mestre Accordeon.
This review is written from the perspective of someone that belongs to the group reviewing it, but has also spent decades in the wider capoeira world.
If you are interested in learning what this whole capoeira thing is all about, with no experience, we’re a great place to start. If you are a martial artist interested in the unorthodox movements, powerful kicks, and distance and timing that capoeira can add to your overall knowledge, we’re a great place to learn. If you are a musician curious about Afro-Brazilian polyrhythms and unique musical instruments, we’re a great place to perform. If you’re a dancer interested in the beautiful movements you’ve seen these capoeira folks do at festivals and stage performances, we’re a great place to explore. And if you are a fellow capoeirista looking for a fun place in Tucson, we’re a great place to play!
Teacher is really nice and is willing to stick with you all the way 👍.

Amazing community and vibe! I immediately felt welcomed and part of the tribe. Instructor/Owner Contramestre Besoru is patient, knowledgeable and the best coach and mentor you could ask for. I am so happy I joined Tucson Capoeira!
One of the best studios I’ve ever been to!

Tucson Capoeira Quilombolas was instant community for me when I moved to Tucson. Contramestre Besouro is an exceptional teacher! He has a ton of life experience that he brings into his teaching and community leadership, and the beautiful community he has cultivated speaks to that. Everyone is very welcoming and I always leave class feeling better than when I walked in the door. Highly recommended!

I was fortunate enough to begin my capoeira journey with these folks and I’ll be forever grateful to them for making me feel so welcome. It only took minutes into my first class for me to realize I’d found a new home.
Contramestre Besouro and his fellow teachers hold such a deep reverence for the history of the art and it shines through in all that you do once you enter the studio. I encourage anyone interested in community, history, music, self-discovery, and a great workout to attend at least one class here if they get the chance.
I look forward to returning to Tucson to train!

My daughter loved the class she took! A fun, family-friendly atmosphere!
We love the kids capoeira class. It is engaging and fun. Quite different than the usual kids classes. Very affordable as well! We will continue onto the next class.
When I need to get my groove going, find my center, and challenge myself I head over to the best Capoeira site in the Grand Canyon State: Tucson Capoeira UCA. With Masters of dance and African fighting styles fused together in spectacular, beautiful fashions, I become one with the spirit, and my mind transcends into a realm of conscious I have never achieved before. For a top shelf experience, I highly recommend you go to Tucson Capoeira UCA and find out for yourself what you can achieve.

Awesome studio! Love it
I was fortunate enough to begin my capoeira journey with these folks and I’ll be forever grateful to them for making me feel so welcome.

Also really appreciate the use of masks inside the class and the seating for parents outside of the class. I met lots of great people and had a blast. Would join the group if I lived in Tucson, and am planning to attend ever time I visit!

Great studio, great community, great teachers. You haven’t lived life until you come here.
Malandragem is much more than a Capoeira training school. They welcome everyone with open arms to join their capoeira family, it doesn’t matter who you are, your personal beliefs, preferences, or ideals. The best part is, they teach and train not for capital gains, but for the love of what they do.
Capoeira Malandragem is a great group to train with. Cool people and good technique.
These people are great. They taught me how to jinga, barrel roll, folha seca, and much more. If you love capoeira, I mean if you really love capoeira, you should train here.
Capoeira Malandragem was the first capoeira studio founded in Tucson in 1996. It is a satellite group of United Capoeira Association which is under the instruction of world renowned Mestre Acordeon. As the longest capoeira studio in the area, the instructors are a vast resource of experience and education for a holistic capoeira experience including capoeira movement, music and Maculele.
Capoeira Malandragem is a great place to learn capoeira from skilled and experienced instructors with a great community! I’ve learned so much during my time here. Love it!!!!!
I really enjoy training with them, they are a very welcoming family with lots of Axé (good energy). Demanding classes that will test your limits and teach you a lot, great rodas and many experienced capoeristas to play, fight and learn this art with.
Such amazing axe/energy in this school! I just joined an amazing family, so devoted, and so motivated to keep moving forward.
It’s a great place to be introduced to every aspect of Capoeira! Extremely family friendly 🙂
This academy introduced me to Capoeira and a whole lot of life experience. Soulful teachers taught through a direct lineage of Mestre Bimba the father of contemporary capoeira. The workouts are amazing and your body will thank you. Come try it out and meet all the great people!!
Capoeira Malandragem is one of the absolute best places to learn capoeira in Tucson. If you are excited to try capoeira, check out Malandragem for sure!!!!
Capoeira Malandragem is a great group of individuals to learn the art of playing Capoeira with in the Tucson area. As a newcomer to Capoeira I’ve found that their spiritual energy is always high. They keep it’s fun but challenging, informative but not overwhelming with clear breakdown of all the moves, music and tradition. If you’re looking to get excited about Capoeira definitely check out Malandragem
my 4yo took the kid Capoeira intro class and has been raving about it for 2 days now. Professor Besouro and some of the older students encouraged her and helped her to feel welcome and a part of the team. We’re excited for more classes!
Capoeria Malandragem is such an awesome group to be a part of with good energy! As a total beginner I can say that the teachers have been nothing but patient and understanding in my Capoeria journey. Professor Besuro has been so supportive cheering me on from the start. He is always willing to answer any questions I have. They are such a welcoming group. I am glad to be a part of their organization.
This place is more than a dance studio our caperiora classmates and teachers are our family who give us a holistic learning experience, in not only caperiora, but in self determination, cultural competency and community engagement. The teachers are knowledgeable and friendly and the workout space is perfect. I recommend anyone looking for an intense physical, spiritual and mental workout to come down and practice caperiora at Movement Culture.
I had visit this place twice and every time I had a really good experience with their instructors and students. I play capoeira and is the main activity I had practice there, but also I saw their other classes and they were very inspiring. Definitely my place to go to practice capoeira in Tucson.
Axé
The good people at this spot know how to make life rich through culture. Come get your daily dose!
There’s very few better ways one could spend a Monday/Wednesday/Saturday/Sunday evening than training Capoeira with such an awesome group!
Great instructors great environment oldest one in Tucson that teaches different styles as well.
Good people
I am a parent of a 7 year old who is learning Capoeira through the Capoeira Maladragium Kids classes. It is challenging as a parent to find the ‘right’ activities for your kids to be involved in. You want them to be exposed to everything but lessons can be expensive and ultimately there are only so many places you can shuttle them around to before there is no time left to just be a family. Capoeira, however, is an activity that is fun and challenging for both adults and kids and covers many facets of expression; martial arts, acrobatics, music, language, culture and dance. We are fortunate to have an excellent Capoeira school here in Tucson that is affordable and has classes for kids and families, while still providing training to serious students and adults. “Professor Besouro” teaches kids on their level and allows them to learn at their own pace. Mostly, he encourages them to have fun while still learning discipline, exercise, and respect. I am so happy to be able to share this beautiful art form with my daughter.
This is the best place to learn capoeira in Tucson. We are like a family here and we train hard! They really opened me up to be a stronger person. If you want to learn capoeira, this is the place to do it!
Its a great and fun place filled with great and friendly people. It’s truly a one of kind, a real find here in Tucson Az!
Highly recommended for an awesome capoeira experience!
Fantastic capoeira school run by a great team- these guys are the real deal!
Great place to learn and receive instruction from!!!
You won’t find greater dedication to Capoeira than that found in the owner of this studio. Definitely worth your time to check out and a good place to bring the whole family.
Great place for the whole family to train! Get strong and fit, while learning about Afro-Brazilian culture through Capoeira.
I don’t live in Tucson but used to play capoeira and was visiting for a while so I dropped in. This is a very friendly group that welcomed me in to train and play. I can’t recommend capoeira enough and it’s nice to see a school that offers something for different ages and levels.
Awesome studio! Love it
I have been training capoeira on and off since 2003 and let me tell you, it changed my life. It has taught me so much aside from the art. I highly recommend this group. They truly care about their students and will do everything possible to ensure your success. They provide world class training and have amazing leadership.
The instructor is awesome.
I’ve been taking capoeira classes for a little over two months now and cannot be any more excited about continuing. The staff are knowledgeable and the practice is challenging and FUN!
Great classes for everyone from beginner to advanced Capoeiristas!
I love capoeira and I love this group:)
Great place to learn a awesome martial arts for the whole family
Clean space with passionate and energetic instructors. They treat you like family! You won’t be disappointed!
I originally wanted get my daughter involved in this activity but I ended up loving it myself! Friendly to newcomers too.
Excellent place to learn Capoeira!
Love the energy in the classroom! Profesores make you feel like family!!! Kids class are awesome too!!!
Incredible staff and positive experience all around!
Movement CULTURE. They mean culture. It is wonderful the level of respect shown to the arts here. It’s not just “something to do” for them, it is a way of life.
Great business and space. Owners create an amazing vibe and atmosphere. Community oriented and super fun! Can’t recommend enough.
All around great establishment! Highly recommended. 💪🏾
I love the studio so much! Great people and great axe!
I have long admired the art that is capoeira, but never had a chance to try it until today.
I arrived a little ahead of time and got to meet the owner and some of the students. Everyone was extremely nice and welcoming. Class started on time.
I especially liked how all of the students started together at the beginning then they split up the class so the experienced students could practice and the newbies could get more personalized instruction. This was extremely helpful as it taught us some of the basic moves and phrases of capoeira. The instructors gave helpful criticism and pushed you with an encouraging use of repetition.
The dojo is bright and spacious. As a dancer and a woman of African heritage, I LOVED all of the singing and music (dem drums tho!!). It took everything in me not to break out dancing. The energy was awesome. The souls were full of life. There were no pretentious airs, like you might encounter at “other” owned martial arts studios. In fact, the owner encouraged students to provide any and all feedback, good or bad.
There are classes for kids, teens, and adults. The adult class is at 6pm on Mondays and Wednesdays. Do check out their website as it houses a plethora of helpful information. The first class is free so there really is no excuse. If I lived in Tucson I would already be a member. Sign up today!
Always fun, professional, and friendly. Feels like family
Great environment to learn techniques and the cultural traditions.
I attended the Saturday community Capoiera class while visiting for the weekend- the class was an amazing workout, great energy, fantastic teacher Contramestre Besouro. I met lots of great people and had a blast. Would join the group if I lived in Tucson, and am planning to attend ever time I visit!

Whenever I’m in AZ, I never miss a chance to train with Tucson Capoeira – UCA. The instructors are knowledgeable and friendly, with a deep commitment to capoeira’s traditions and history. The level of AXÉ generated during class and rodas is both palpable and inspiring! I highly recommend this group if you’re looking to train hard and play with some skillful capoeiristas!
I have been training for a few weeks now. The tribe is so supportive. They train hard and still have a good time. I highly recommend Tucson Capoeira – UCA!
amazing teacher! not only in class but in life and community as well.
I was back in Tucson for a few weeks and was happy to take a couple of classes while visiting. The energy and sense of community here is exactly what I would expect from a solid Capoeira program. Thank you for the great training and for welcoming me back with open arms and keeping Capoeira alive and strong in Tucson! Whether you have done Capoeira before or never heard of it you should definitely check out a class!!!
Wonderful place to train for adults and children! So many classes to choose from. Wonderful instructors, awesome community hub.
Teacher is really nice and is willing to stick with you all the way 👍.
Great space/ academy with amazing instructors that know what they are doing! A great place for
Beginners to start their movement journey!
Passionate and knowledgable teachers!
Great community. People really care about each other. I’m learning a ton and feel great physically.
You get so much out of the kids capoeira class here — community, culture, discipline, exercise, history, language, music… and of course, fun! Also really appreciate the use of masks inside the class and the seating for parents outside of the class. We’ve had such a great experience here and it’s such a bargain compared to other activities we have participated in.
A friend recommended UCA and my kids (4.5 & 9 yrs) are excited every week to learn not only new moves but the history of Capeora all thanks to the great instructor who makes it fun for all ages.
Great energy, great workout and most importantly, great instructor. He really takes the time to work with each student to help them with the techniques. He also does a great job of helping students understand the concepts being taught. Highly recommended for anyone looking for something challenging and fun.
Love it!
It’s fun, engaging and the community is very welcoming
Amazing community and vibe! I immediately felt welcomed and part of the tribe. Instructor/Owner Contramestre Besoru is patient, knowledgeable and the best coach and mentor you could ask for. I am so happy I joined Tucson Capoeira!
One of the best studios I’ve ever been to!
My kid likes the school. Gives her a break from texting and video games. Which means, I like it too.
Awesome teachers. Awesome environment. I visit every time I have the opportunity to.
Our teenager loves going to classes here, and is always looking forward to the next class! There is alwase a lot of good energy!
This has been a wonderful class for my grandson. Teachers are professional and the kids have fun while gaining balance strength and some language skills. Thank you.
Beautiful studio and a beautiful community! Thank you!
Tucson capoeira has a gorgeous studio space and the community is welcoming and very supportive. It is a family environment that makes you feel apart of it right when you walk in the door.
Great classes
Great teacher!
We are new to capoeira but have been very pleased with this experience for our kids (they started at age 8 and 10 but some start much younger). Building strength of mind, body and character while also having fun. Safe environment and community involvement is A+
Malandragem is much more than a Capoeira training school.
Good people
This is the best place to learn capoeira in Tucson.

I originally wanted get my daughter involved in this activity but I ended up loving it myself! Friendly to newcomers too.
Excellent place to learn Capoeira!
Love the energy in the classroom! Profesores make you feel like family!!! Kids class are awesome too!!!
Incredible staff and positive experience all around!
The instructor is awesome.
amazing teacher! not only in class but in life and community as well.

Teacher is really nice and is willing to stick with you all the way 👍.
Great space/ academy with amazing instructors that know what they are doing! A great place for
Beginners to start their movement journey!
Passionate and knowledgable teachers!
Highly recommended for an awesome capoeira experience!
Fantastic capoeira school run by a great team- these guys are the real deal!
This place is more than a dance studio our caperiora classmates and teachers are our family who give us a holistic learning experience, in not only caperiora, but in self determination, cultural competency and community engagement.
Good people
Clean space with passionate and energetic instructors. They treat you like family! You won’t be disappointed!
Great place to learn and receive instruction from!!!

This is the best place to learn capoeira in Tucson. We are like a family here and we train hard! They really opened me up to be a stronger person. If you want to learn capoeira, this is the place to do it!

Clean space with passionate and energetic instructors. They treat you like family! You won’t be disappointed!
Great place to learn and receive instruction from!!!
Love it
I love the studio so much!
I originally wanted get my daughter involved in this activity but I ended up loving it myself! Friendly to newcomers too.
Excellent place to learn Capoeira!
Love the energy in the classroom! Profesores make you feel like family!!! Kids class are awesome too!!!
Incredible staff and positive experience all around!

Teacher is really nice and is willing to stick with you all the way 👍.
Love it!

Incredible staff and positive experience all around!
The instructor is awesome.
I’ve been taking capoeira classes for a little over two months now and cannot be any more excited about continuing. The staff are knowledgeable and the practice is challenging and FUN!
Great classes for everyone from beginner to advanced Capoeiristas!

I love capoeira and I love this group:)
Great place to learn a awesome martial arts for the whole family
Clean space with passionate and energetic instructors. They treat you like family! You won’t be disappointed!
Love it
Great space/ academy with amazing instructors that know what they are doing!

Teacher is really nice and is willing to stick with you all the way 👍.
This has been a wonderful class for my grandson. Teachers are professional and the kids have fun while gaining balance strength and some language skills. Thank you.
Good people
Such amazing axe/energy in this school!
When I need to get my groove going, find my center, and challenge myself I head over to the best Capoeira site in the Grand Canyon State: Tucson Capoeira UCA. I have been training capoeira on and off since 2003 and let me tell you, it changed my life. It has taught me so much aside from the art. I highly recommend this group. They truly care about their students and will do everything possible to ensure your success. They provide world class training and have amazing leadership.
My kid likes the school. Gives her a break from texting and video games. Which means, I like it too.

They truly care about their students and will do everything possible to ensure your success. They provide world class training and have amazing leadership.
Good people
Such amazing axe/energy in this school!
Teacher is really nice and is willing to stick with you all the way 👍.

I really enjoy training with them, they are a very welcoming family with lots of Axé (good energy). Demanding classes that will test your limits and teach you a lot, great rodas and many experienced capoeristas to play, fight and learn this art with.

Wonderful place to train for adults and children! So many classes to choose from. Wonderful instructors, awesome community hub.

Movement CULTURE. They mean culture. It is wonderful the level of respect shown to the arts here. It’s not just “something to do” for them, it is a way of life.
Great business and space. Owners create an amazing vibe and atmosphere. Community oriented and super fun! Can’t recommend enough.

I attended the Saturday community Capoiera class while visiting for the weekend- the class was an amazing workout, great energy, fantastic teacher Contramestre Besouro. I met lots of great people and had a blast. Would join the group if I lived in Tucson, and am planning to attend ever time I visit!

Fantastic capoeira school run by a great team- these guys are the real deal!
This place is more than a dance studio our caperiora classmates and teachers are our family who give us a holistic learning experience, in not only caperiora, but in self determination, cultural competency and community engagement.
